Known History:
Atalanta (A14) is one of the three known remaining keel boats of this class designed for racing in the Salcombe estuary before WW2. The other two remaining yachts - Joan (A1) and Wiluna II (A4) are both still also based on the Salcombe Estuary.
Atalanta's history before 1999 is still being researched but what we do know is that in 1999 she was sold by her then owner, who raced her on the Solent, to a syndicate of four. Their aim was to bring her back to Salcombe but unfortunately a mooring in the estuary could not be found and so she ended up in Plymouth. There she was raced for several years before being sold in late 2003 to a Mr Barnett. From 2004 to 2008 she was kept on the River Dart and sailed regularly.
In 2008 Mr Barnett bought a larger Morgan Giles yacht and Atalanta was sold to her new owner. Happily her new owner has managed to find her a berth on the Salcombe estuary.
For the first time in many years Joan, Wiluna II and Atalanta can on occasion be seen sailing together, just like they did in the 1930's, 40's & 50's.
